Seasoned pros Waylon Woolcock and HB Kruger captured the overall title in the three-day Liberty Winelands Encounter mountain bike race at their first attempt today after setting the pace from day one.

Using the same strategy as before, the BCX duo were again able to build up a lead during the first half of the 48km final stage in the Wellington area en route to winning in 1:49:34.

On the day, they were followed by Versus Socks’ Jurgens Uys and Nicol Carstens (1:51:07) and TIB Insurance-Momsen Valley Light’s Andrew Hill and Marco Joubert (1:52:34).

Overnight leaders Waylon Woolcock and HB Kruger produced another controlled performance to create a telling gap after the second stage of the Liberty Winelands Encounter in the Boland today.

The BCX pair used their knowledge of the region – Woolcock is from Stellenbosch and Kruger from Paarl – to build a six-minute lead going into the final stage tomorrow.

Quickest out of the blocks on the early Botmaskop climb out of Stellenbosch, Waylon Woolcock and HB Kruger stamped their mark on the opening stage of the three-day Liberty Winelands Encounter today.

Although the BCX pair were pushed at times, they eventually got away about midway through the stage to take the top spot on the podium after finishing the 54km course to Franschhoek in 2:11:39.

SKYFALL AND BOSCHENDAL NOW PART OF STAGE 1
The news just keeps getting better for participants in the 2017 Liberty Winelands Encounter, which takes place on 21-23 April next year. The organisation this week announced significant changes to stage 1 which will see the stage for the first time incorporate the impressive single track at Boschendal Estate after coming down the equally legendary Skyfall single track on Bartiney Estate on Helshoogte.

Overall the vertical ascent on the stage will also come down significantly courtesy of some wonderful new route access the event has received over the prestigious L’Ormirans Estate.

Chris Wolhuter and Craig Boyes sealed the overall win after cruising to their third consecutive stage victory in the Liberty Winelands MTB Encounter on Sunday.

The Imbuko-Freewheel Cycology pair, who had an 18-minute buffer going into the final day, completed the 48km final stage around Kleine Valleij in Wellington in 1:58:45.

Hanco Kachelhoffer and Colin Noel of Altech-Autopage followed them home in 2:02:36 with Neil Swartz and Rikus Visser of SDK Legends third in 2:08:39.

Wolhuter and Boyes, who hail from Cape Town and Stellenbosch respectively, topped the general classification with an aggregate time of 6:45:19.

Defending champion Chris Wolhuter and protégé Craig Boyes crushed their rivals on the second day of the Liberty Winelands MTB Encounter to build up a comfortable lead going into Sunday’s grand finale.

As they had done on the opening day, the Imbuko-Freewheel Cycology professional team set the pace for most of the way to win the 57km stage between Franschhoek and Kleine Valleij outside Wellington in 2:20:00.

They got the better of Altech-Autopage’s Colin Noel and Hanco Kachelhoffer, who finished a distant second in 2:28:42.

Defending champion Chris Wolhuter and new teammate Craig Boyes made an early break to race to a comfortable victory on the opening stage of the Liberty Winelands MTB Encounter on Friday.

Despite the relatively short ride of 54km between Coetzenburg in Stellenbosch and Le Franschhoek Hotel on the outskirts of Franschhoek, Wolhuter said there was plenty of climbing and it had not been an easy day in the saddle.

The 27-year-old Imbuko-Freewheel Cycology pro, who won alongside Jarred Haley last year, said he received excellent support from Boyes as they romped home in 2:26:34.

Defending champion Chris Wolhuter will line up for his title defence at the Liberty Winelands MTB Encounter with a new teammate.

The 27-year-old, who won the inaugural event alongside Jarryd Haley, will be joining forces with Craig Boyes in the three-day race that starts at Coetzenburg on Friday.

Wolhuter, who launched the Imbuko-Freewheel Cycology professional team this year, first partnered with Boyes at this year’s Cape Epic.

A three-day encounter over some of the best mountain biking terrain beckons for cyclists when the Liberty Winelands Encounter takes place from April 15 to 17.

The inaugural event was limited to 100 two-man teams to ensure a boutique feel, according to ASG race organiser Wynand de Villiers.

Chris Wolhuter and Jarryd Haley claimed all three stage wins en route to overall victory at the inaugural Liberty Winelands MTB Encounter in Wellington on Sunday.

The Altech Autopage duo took the debut honours in the 175km Western Cape race in a combined time of 8:13:41.

Flandria grand masters Eben Espach and Linus van Onselen finished second in the general classification in 8:58:29, with the SDK Legends pairing of Rikus Visser and Divan Koch rounding out the podium in 9:16:29.
